Kim and Lila, 1997
From The Topeka Capital-Journal |
DeLila Mize McCabe was an author, poet and songwriter. She and her husband, Charles, had four daughters. They built a lovely home called The Lake Place that overlooked Perry Lake and the Hurley farm place near Meriden, Kansas.
Lila also was a certified nurse and served as an in-home care provider. She wrote a book of poetry called "Bushels of Love." Lila's short story called "Ole Nate" was based on her friendship and memories of times with Nate Isaac, an old bachelor who lived next to the Hurley family and shared his thoughts and memories with her. Sadly, Lila died in 1998 from cancer. Kim Hurley Andrews was in high school when she learned that three of her family members died mysteriously in a farmhouse fire. That crime remains mostly unsolved. After she met Lila McCabe, her co-author, they worked on the story together for several years. Kim went back to work full time after the birth of her second son, and then Lila passed away. Halfway into her career, Kim received a call to enter ministry. She graduated with an M.Div. from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, was ordained in 2023, and has served ten congregations across Kansas. Kim picked up the manuscript again during Covid and started writing once more. The book was completed and published last year. Now, we ask you to decide: What really happened the night of the farmhouse fire? Did Jennie Hurley die, or did she somehow escape? |
